In November 2018, Amgen Foundation expanded the Amgen Scholars Program (ASP) to 24 premier educational and research institutions worldwide. Tsinghua University was selected as the first and currently the only host institution in China and is now accepting global applications. The ASP host institutions for 2019-2023 include 24 leading universities worldwide, such as Harvard University, Stanford University and University of Cambridge. There are four distinguished hosts in Asia: The University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, National University of Singapore and Tsinghua University. As the ASP’s first and only host institution in China, Tsinghua will fully leverage its world-class research capabilities and talents, while working closely with the Amgen Foundation, to offer high-potential and high-caliber young scholars the opportunity to participate in frontier research.
Tsinghua ASP
The Tsinghua ASP will select around 22 candidates this year, whom will be paired with voluntary mentors upon enrollment. They will have the opportunity to participate in frontier biomedical research projects with state-of-the-art lab facilities, alongside senior scientists and top Tsinghua faculty. These immersive and intensive trainings will help scholars enhance their experimental skills, gain hands-on lab experiences and build a solid foundation for their further development.
In addition, the Amgen Scholars will be encouraged to interact with Tsinghua students and attend a variety of seminars, symposiums and networking events both at Tsinghua and in other host institutions.
In recent years, Tsinghua University has been actively seeking to cultivate diversified talents and facilitate international collaborations. It has made significant progress in innovation-driven talent development. As Tsinghua’s main correspondent collaborator for the ASP, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Tsinghua University (Tsinghua SPS), plays an important role in the university’s life sciences development and frontier biomedical research. The ASP will serve as the first of many future collaborations between Tsinghua University and the Amgen Foundation.
2019
Tsinghua SPS successfully held its first Amgen Scholars Program in 2019, creating beautiful memories together with Amgen Scholars.
2020-2021
Due to the COVID-19, 2020-2021 Tsinghua Amgen Scholars Program switched online. We invited old friends and professors from Tsinghua SPS to bring wonderful lectures to scholars.
2022
In 2022, from June to August, six Amgen Scholars from top universities in China of Tsinghua University completed an eight-week summer research training on the campus of Tsinghua University. In this scientific research training, Amgen scholars went into the laboratory under the guidance of their tutors and participated in the research of cutting-edge topics in biomedicine.
2023
The program is open to all qualified scholars at home and abroad.

As one of very first students of Tsinghua Amgen Scholars Program, I had an exceptional opportunity to explore not only Beijing, a long-history city with a lot of well-preserved old buildings but also the college daily life in the best university in China. And also, this program provided me a chance to go to Singapore, participating the Symposium, presenting about my project, listening to the impressive lectures and sharing the ideas with other fellows from three other universities. This summer with Tsinghua will be an unforgettable memory of my life.

The Amgen scholars program in Tsinghua University has really helped me to slowly discover the career that I want to do in this research field as well as letting me realize how crucial a scientific discovery is in one’s survival which really motivate me to dive deeper into this field. This program also gave me the opportunity to meet new people from different background and to exchange ideas with them. I am so happy to see how we all can grow together as a supportive group and with the same goal to discover more hidden things in science.20

I was honored to enter in Pro. Haidong Tang’s Lab which focus on Tumor Immunology. It is such a wonderful experience to work with my colleagues in Tang Lab, where I took on tasks of an independent project and learned the whole profile of DCs in tumor immunology, its promising features as well as the outstanding problems in immunotherapies.
Reviewing my work of the past two months in Tang Lab, our research work in gene1 is pioneering and challenging. Hands-on experiments, results analysis and working system design and refinement, every step inspires me to explore deeper and wider. The most important lesson I learned here is possibilities lies in the unexpected results and contemplation and analysis is as important as experimental operation. The success of repetition of the unexpected results should not be taken as the golden rules, but the consistent asking why and how is.

Participating in the 2022 Amgen Scholars program was a very enriching experience that not only gave me the basics to carry out independent lab work, but also introduced me to the wonderful world of scientific research. Thanks to this program, I got to know a new research field to me called synthetic biology, and learned some of the basics of protein design and engineering. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my PI, Professor Shuyi Zhang, and all the members of his lab for all the help they gave me during these two months and for allowing me to participate in their cutting-edge research in their field.
