School of Basic Medical Sciences

In the Year of loong 2024, the School of Basic Medical Sciences at Tsinghua University has been officially established, marking a new stage in the development of basic medical sciences of Tsinghua University. Since the foundation of its predecessor, the Department of Basic Medicine at Tsinghua University in 2012, the school has achieved significant accomplishments in just 12 years: in 2019, it was authorized to offer doctoral degrees in basic medicine; in 2022 and 2023, it was rated A+ in basic medicine by Times Higher Education's China Subject Ranking; and in 2023, it was approved for a postdoctoral research station in basic medicine. The school adheres to a discipline layout oriented towards “the forefront of global scientific technology, the main battlefield in economic , national major needs, and public health. Its disciplines in immunology, microbiology and infectious diseases, neuroscience, and molecular and cell biology are ranked in the top 1% globally in ESI. The past twelve years have witnessed the rigorous and practical attitude, innovative perseverance, and dedicated spirit of the faculty and students in basic medicine.

Guided by Xi Jinping's Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and fully implementing the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the school focuses on moral education and national service as its core tasks, striving to promote high-quality discipline development. The school has established four centers focused on diseases and health: the Center for Immunobiology, the Center for Cancer Biology, the Center for Infection Biology, and the Center for Regeneration,Aging and Chronic Diseases. These centers integrate research and teaching, enhance the layout of cutting-edge disciplines, and set up 13 working committees for teaching management, academic review, talent recruitment, salary management, and asset and platform management to improve system execution. The school emphasizes academic leadership, with a group of faculty members publishing high-quality papers in top international journals, achieving significant breakthroughs in areas such as COVID-19 neutralizing antibodies, viral invasion and replication mechanisms, immune memory mechanisms, hair follicle response, epigenetics, mosquito-borne transmission, and immune defense mechanisms against infections, continuously advancing basic medical science innovation. The school actively organizes high-quality, impactful academic and educational conferences to build a comprehensive, cutting-edge academic exchange platform and create a favorable academic environment for talent development and growth.

The School of Basic Medical Sciences at Tsinghua University has successfully contributed to the establishment of two national key laboratories: the National Key Laboratory of Molecular Oncology and the National Key Laboratory of Difficult and Severe Diseases and Rare Diseases. The school has produced a "mountain-climbing team" that has played an important role in original innovation, basic research, and technological transformation. The school will continue to enhance and upgrade its public research platforms, build innovative research institutions, strengthen national strategic science and technology capabilities, enhance organized basic research, establish technology innovation mechanisms, and improve the effectiveness of achievement transformation.

The school will continue to deepen reforms in faculty personnel systems, establish mechanisms for selecting and cultivating young innovative talents, and train national strategic talent. Currently, the school employs 175 staff members, including 42 in research and teaching, 6 in teaching, 22 in research, 4 in experimental technology, and 13 administrative education staff. Among the research and teaching faculty, there is one academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Additionally, the school has 135 postdoctoral researchers and 103 contract staff.

Currently, the School of Basic Medical Sciences has 253 students in the 8-year clinical medicine program (MD), 51 students in the 8-year clinical medicine program (MD/PhD), totaling 304 students, and 516 graduate students. The school consistently upholds the fundamental task of moral education, improves the education evaluation system, establishes subject teaching groups, builds advanced teaching platforms, explores top-notch innovative talent cultivation models, and provides world-class educational resources to more outstanding students, focusing on nurturing top-tier scientific leaders.

As an important cornerstone of Tsinghua’s medical education, the School of Basic Medical Sciences will adhere to the motto of "Self-Discipline and Social Commitment" and the school spirit of "Actions speak louder than words," striving to build a top-tier teaching and research institution that excels in academic excellence, leading education, and social service. It will maintain high-quality development, establish an innovative mechanism for scientific research, talent cultivation, and education, enhance forward-looking and strategic discipline layout, and cultivate medical talents with international vision and innovative spirit, contributing to the high-quality development of the discipline and writing a new chapter for the health cause in China.
